Suharto may return cash - Family demands pardon

Former Indonesian president Suharto’s family members are negotiating to give back any money he illegally acquired during his rule, the Associated Press reported.

Attorney General Marzuki Darusman told the Associated Press the government is working to reach a deal with Suharto’s eldest daughter Sitihardiyanti Rukmana, known as Tutut.

Darusman said a deal would not necessarily end the corruption case being prepared against Suharto. President Abdurrahman Wahid has said he is willing to pardon Suharto for any wrongdoing if the former leader returns alleged ill-gotten gains, however.

One of Suharto’s lawyers, Mohammed Assegaf, said the ex-dictator’s family would demand guarantees that no legal action would be taken if he surrendered assets to the state.
