Fundraising fees down

Professional solicitors raised a lot more money for North Carolina nonprofits in fiscal 2005, and pocketed nearly half those dollars, a new report says.

The state Secretary of State’s office released its annual “Charitable Solicitation Report,” which analyzes funds raised by telemarketers and other solicitors on behalf on nonprofits.

In the fiscal year ended June 30, paid solicitors grossed $204.6 million, up from $145.6 million a year earlier, the report says.

While the percentage of money returned to nonprofits hit a record high in 2005, solicitors on average still kept nearly 45 percent of the dollars they raised.

The amount nonprofits netted ranged from zero to 100 percent of funds raised.

Civic Development Group, for example, raised a total of $5,572,012 on behalf of the Fraternal Order of Police NC State Lodge during two campaigns, of which the Fraternal Order netted $533,334, less than 10 percent of the gross receipts.

The Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce Community Development Foundation, however, netted over 96 percent of the $8,775,900 raised during a campaign conducted by National Community Development Services.

The Secretary of State’s office said a low net amount for nonprofits could be due to educational campaigns, which are not designed solely to raise money, or could reflect campaigns not completed during the reporting period.
