Asion to lead El Pueblo

RALEIGH, N.C. - Tony Asion, the new head of El Pueblo, plans to help Latinos and non-Latinos better understand each.

Asion, a native of Cuba, previously served as deputy director of the statewide Hispanic advocacy group and was named executive director on March 1.

His top priority is to help North Carolinians, both within and outside the Hispanic community, overcome their fears of each other and learn to work together by focusing on commonalities and differences.

"We're not the bad guys," said Asion in a March 7 News & Observer article.  "We're not here to harm anybody. We're not here to take anybody's jobs."

A former Delaware state trooper, Asion joined El Pueblo as public safety director in 2004 and has worked on issues such as drunk driving prevention and gang prevention.

Established in 1995 and with a current staff of 15, El Pueblo works to strengthen the state's Latino community through advocacy and public policy.
