Progress Energy wraps up summer initiative

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Progress Energy recently completed its Summer of Service initiative, launched by employees in celebration of the company's 100^th anniversary.

The initiative, which started June 1, aimed to provide service to 100 community projects in the Carolinas and Florida for 100 days in the summer.  

Employees nearly doubled the company's goal by completing 182 projects, performing a total of 10,000 community service hours.

Some of the organizations benefiting from the initiative were Raleigh-based Stop Hunger Now, Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels.

Progress Energy provides electricity to 3.1 million customers in North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida.

"As we begin our second century of service, we remain committed to being a reliable source of energy - not only electricity for our customers' homes and businesses, but also the kind of energy that helps build and sustain our communities," Bill Johnson, Progress Energy chairman, president and CEO, says in a statement.
