WakeMed aims to raise $20M for kids

RALEIGH -- WakeMed Foundation has launched a campaign to raise $20 million to fund the construction of a 34,000-square-foot children's hospital, the first of its kind in North Carolina.

Chaired by Ron Doggett, former CEO of Goodmark Foods, the campaign already has received over $4.1 million in donations.

The children's hospital will occupy the fourth floor of a patient tower already under construction at WakeMed's Raleigh campus and will have a 23-bed inpatient unit with private rooms, a 10-bed pediatric intensive care unit, a 12-bed observation unit, an intensive-care nursery and new surgical capabilities and specialists.

The campaign opened with a $1.5 million donation by General Parts International, also know as Carquest, a vehicle-parts business based in Raleigh.

"We recognize that first-rate health care is fundamental for the viability of any community and it is important that the children of our teammates, their families and this community have access to it," O. Temple Sloan III, president and chief operating officer of General Parts, says in a statement.

WakeMed also has invited its employees to donate to the campaign, with $1 million in employee contributions collected so far.

The hospital is scheduled to be completed in 2010.

WakeMed Foundation, the philanthropic partner of WakeMed Health & Hospitals, works to raise money for projects that improve medical care for the citizens of Wake County and North Carolina.
